Title: Modelling and passivity-based control of multi-producer district heating systems.
Abstract:
District heating (DH) has been identified as a key technology for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector. Prospective DH systems would be more sustainable by increasing the share of renewable energy sources (e.g., geothermal or solar thermal), waste heat sources (e.g., from industrial buildings) and thermal storage units. As a consequence, they will feature topologies with multiple (and distributed) heat producers connected to a common distribution network—in stark contrast with conventional installations.
In this talk, we will discuss modelling aspects to describe the thermal and hydraulic dynamic behaviour of this type of systems via non-linear ODEs. Also, we will present conditions under which the derived system model exhibits shifted passivity properties. Finally, the usefulness of these properties will be illustrated with the design of passivity-based, decentralized controllers for flow and storage volume regulation with closed-loop stability guarantees.
